This scene is from my village Kafnaul (Uttarkashi) at 9:30 am. The day of Basant Panchami, January 23, 2026, will be remembered. The unpredictability of the weather has brought silence to the faces of farmers.
Kafnaul is located at an altitude of approximately 2200 meters, higher than Mussoorie. There are apple orchards here. Snowfall has brought a glow to the faces of the apple orchards. This is the first snowfall of the year. In my village, snowfall used to start from December 15th, and from January to March, our contact with the Uttarkashi headquarters would be cut off.
The people of my village could never attend the Magh Mela. But for the past 20 years, snowfall has been very less in Kafnaul and its surrounding areas. For 15 years, Radi Top has not been closed due to snow. This means that the people of the Yamuna Valley are able to reach the Uttarkashi headquarters these days. The point is that from Radi Top to my village and towards Barkot, everything used to be covered in snow.
That’s why the people of the Yamuna Valley couldn’t reach the Uttarkashi headquarters from January to March. I can say from my memories that nature has changed a lot. This snowfall is very less compared to 20 years ago.
My experience with snow is long. Will write more some other time.
